Waheenee: An Indian Girl's Story Told by Herself to Gilbert L. Wilson is a reprint of the 1927 original publication. As a Hidatsa woman, Buffalo Bird Woman or Waheenee was born in an earth lodge in 1839 three years following a smallpox epidemic. Contacted by a researcher from the American Museum of Natural History, Waheenee became a valuable informant of her people's culture from a woman's perspective. Her story recounts her childhood, her life as an adolescent, and her later years as a knowledgeable, highly-skilled woman of her culture. She describes Hidatsa childhood games, growing up in an earth lodge, family relationships and clans, training a dog, picking berries, corn husking, marriage, a buffalo hunt, the birth of her child, setting up camp, and cooking.
